Skim or Replaster? How to Tell What Your Walls Need

It’s the question behind every plastering quote — and the difference is hundreds of pounds per room. Here’s how we decide, so you can sense-check any quote you’re given.
When a skim is all you need
If the existing plaster is solid and well-bonded, a 2–3mm skim over the top gives you flat, paint-ready walls in a day. Wallpaper scars, filler patches, hairline cracks and dated textured finishes are all skim territory. Most rooms in decent condition fall here.
When it has to come off
- Hollow sounds — tap the wall; drummy, hollow patches mean plaster has parted from the wall behind and will pull away, taking a new skim with it
- Crumbling or soft plaster — especially low on walls, often old damp damage
- Salts and staining — white fluffy deposits mean contaminated plaster that will spoil any new finish
- Blown patches around old repairs — skimming over failure just resets the clock on it
The honest middle ground
Most real rooms are mixed: three sound walls and one bad one. The right answer is stripping the failed wall and skimming the rest — not paying to replaster everything, and not skimming over a wall that’s already let go.
